Etymology
The term comes from the "plural" form of the overused Internets acronym "lol" - laugh out loud. According to Fox News, "lulz" is actually a corruption of "lol," which Anonymous apparently gains by blowing up yellow vans. Lulz is gained through several outlets by several groups of people, #iamthewalrus included.
Lulz is never used in general context, except by faggots, who like to replace "lol" with "lulz" or just "lul."
Acquisition

Lulzcows
Lulzcows are a select group of idiots that provide endless lulz due to their constant stupidity and ridiculousness. Lulzcows are milked time and time again using one or moar of the methods listed above. There are many reasons lulzcows keep coming back to be laughed at; they enjoy the attention, they're affiliated with some sort of religion, they think other people care about their opinions, they're trying too hard to be cool, or they're just plain retarded.

For the lulz
I did it for the lulz, or simply for the lulz, is an expression for something that is done solely and purely for lulz. "For the lulz" is one of the many reasons #iamthewalrus does what they do. Some idiots don't realize that there is a difference between doing something for "no reason" and doing it for the lulz.
If you feel remorse after doing something you later regretted doing, just saying "I did it for the lulz" aloud three times will instantly clear your conscience.
